Short answer
Bulk SMS is usually defined this way: a large list, one shared message, and cost based on count. Targeted SMS starts the opposite way: audience and area first, then copy, then send. We did not build a separate “bulk SMS” page because Northweb’s position is not irrelevant sending.
If you want the targeting definition on its own: what is targeted SMS. Service path: targeted SMS.
Explanation
Bulk appeals to anyone who wants to see “coverage” quickly. A high send report feels like progress. The problem is that unrelated phones are counted in the same report. You paid for a message whose recipient cannot even be your customer.
Targeted starts slower because you have to think. Who is the customer? Where do they come from? What should they do after the message? Those questions shrink volume and usually raise quality. For local businesses, that quality matters more than a volume record.
This comparison is not an attack on cheap panels or SMS gateways. The sending tool is one thing; audience strategy is another. You can send targeted with the cheapest panel, and you can send irrelevant bulk with the most expensive one.
Local business example
If a training center in one district messages an entire province, a few distant people may reply, but in-person enrollments usually come from the same area. Cost spent on distant messages does not turn into useful calls.
By contrast, if the same center messages parents in that neighborhood, with class hours and a clear contact path, response odds are higher. Volume is lower; relevance is higher.
Common mistake
Using “price per message” alone as the metric. A low unit price that reaches an unrelated audience ends up expensive. A better metric: after the send, how many relevant calls came in, and could your team answer them?
Another error is building a separate duplicate page for the phrase “bulk SMS.” We cover that intent in this guide so we do not create fake competition with the service page. See other errors in SMS advertising mistakes.
Next step
Ask yourself whether your product or service is national or local. If it is local, set bulk aside as the main goal and shrink the area.

Common questions
What is the main difference between targeted and bulk?
Bulk is about list size and send volume. Targeted first defines a relevant audience, then sends.
Why don’t you have a separate bulk SMS page?
Because our position is not irrelevant sending. This comparison covers that intent without building a duplicate money page.
Is high volume always bad?
No. If the product is national and the audience is truly broad, volume can make sense. For local businesses, targeting is usually more logical.
Which is cheaper?
Bulk may show a lower unit price, but cost per relevant customer can be higher. Without knowing the area, a fixed number is misleading.
